It's still not easy for me to admit it, but that night I used my pain to feed my professional ambition. In a previous job, burnout nearly killed me, and I vowed to never let ambition swallow me again. There's a fine line between the motivation needed to build a successful career and the uncontrolled ambition that ends in burnout. As I unpacked this predicament in therapy, I began to wonder: How did ambition become such a force in our world? In the ancient world, ambition was seen as a curse.

Such legislation would make Pennsylvania the first major fossil fuel-producing state to adopt a carbon-pricing program. Shapiro's proposal comes as environmentalists are pressuring him to do more to fight climate change in the nation’s No. 2 gas-producing state and as the state's highest court considers a challenge to his predecessor's plan to adopt a carbon-pricing program. Currently, about 60% of the state's electricity comes from natural gas-fired power plants, and the 50% requirement could hurt demand for electricity from those plants. Shapiro’s administration did not provide many details of his strategy Wednesday, including how much money power plants would pay or how the average household electric bill would be affected.

The title of Ethan Coen’s leaden romp “Drive-Away Dolls” summons up the vulgar excesses of old-school exploitation cinema, with its horrors and pleasures, carnage and flesh. This is the most recent movie that Ethan Coen has made without his brother, Joel, his longtime collaborator. (Ethan also made the 2022 documentary “Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind.”) To a degree, “Drive-Away Dolls” seems of a piece with the Coens’ practice of playing with story forms (film genres and otherwise), which they have consistently satirized, upended and all but gutted. Written by Coen and his wife, Tricia Cooke, “Drive-Away Dolls” opens on an old-style neon bar sign spelling out the word “Cicero,” immediately suggesting that you’re in familiar Coen territory. Last year was 1.26 degrees Celsius (2.27 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer and this year is likely to blow past that, according to scientists. Even though the carbon budget looks to run out early in the year 2029, that doesn’t mean the world will instantly hit 1.5 degrees warmer than pre-industrial times. People should not misinterpret running out of the budget for 1.5 degrees as the only time left to stop global warming, the authors said. “If we are able to limit warming to 1.6 degrees or 1.65 degrees or 1.7 degrees, that’s a lot better than 2 degrees. Lamboll said limiting warming to 1.5 degrees is technically possible, but politically is challenging and unlikely.

TikTok is testing a search partnership with Google, a move that underscores the rapid pace at which the way people search online is evolving. Clicking on the link takes the user to an in-app browser, which displays Google's search results for the query. TikTok is also running a disclaimer that it "does not endorse or take responsibility for search results from Google," per Oncescu's screenshots. A TikTok spokesperson confirmed the company is experimenting with third-party integrations within the TikTok app, including a test with Google. "This partnership is a great way for both companies to learn about new behaviors of search in a different journey than traditional Google search," Cicero said.

In my early 50s, I was forced to retire early after a near-death experience to take care of my health. But at 62, after feeling bored, restless and stuck, I un-retired and started a coaching company to help people achieve a more fulfilling retirement than I did. Here are four myths about retirement that more people need to talk about:Myth #1: Life follows a linear path. Don't wait for retirement to live the life you want. Benedictine monks are encouraged to "keep death daily before your eyes," so that they can live life more fully and in a detached manner.

Chicago area gig workers who use Walmart's delivery platform Spark say bots are a growing issue. They say users who deploy bots make it harder for them to make enough money on the platform. It's unclear exactly how prevalent bots are on Walmart's Spark platform. Workers who fill orders for multiple apps, from Instacart to DoorDash, have used — and complained — about bots for years. Gig workers can set bots to claim specific orders, such as those with delivery addresses close to them.

Vance, Republican of Ohio, used two recent hearings to argue that Housing First ignores the root causes of homelessness. The Cicero Institute, a Texas policy group, is promoting model state legislation that bars Housing First programs from receiving state funds. The escalating war over an obscure social service doctrine is partly an earnest policy dispute and partly an old-fashioned rivalry between groups seeking federal funds. “When people have a safe and stable place to live, they can address other things in their lives. If critics succeed in defunding these successful programs, we’re going to see a lot more deaths on the street.”

With great-power tensions rising and wars raging, the idea of neutrality these days may seem to many people anachronistic at best and amoral at worst. Today, there are a great many places where neutral humanitarian action is under grave threat. If we did, it wouldn’t be possible to provide humanitarian assistance to people across the world’s most contentious theaters of armed conflict. Here’s the problem: Civilians affected by armed conflict — whether in Ukraine, Sudan or Syria — are not always receiving the assistance they deserve. Worse, they’re being injured and killed in the crossfire or when combatants violate the laws of war.
But investors still have to contend with uncertainty as analysts continue to warn of a recession this year. Stock screen CNBC Pro screened for stocks in the S & P 500, Nasdaq Composite and MSCI World for cheap stocks with big upside. They met the following criteria: Stocks trading at a lower forward price-to-earnings ratio relative to their average five-year forward P/E multiple; "Buy" ratings from at least 40% of analysts covering them; Upside to average price target of 30% or more. First Solar and Broadwind Energy stood out for having among the highest potential upside on the list at 175% and 250%, respectively. Of the stocks on CNBC's screen, Valero Energy is trading at the steepest discount at 95%.
A think tank created by a Palantir co-founder is behind model legislation banning "public camping." So far, Texas and Missouri have passed laws making public camping a Class C misdemeanor. Many states and cities have taken a punitive approach to the problem, making homeless encampments illegal. In 2021, Texas became the first state to pass a Cicero-inspired state-wide law, making public camping a Class C misdemeanor punishable with up to a $500 fine. And, if they don't comply with the ban, it criminalizes their living condition," Eric Samuels, president and CEO of the Texas Homeless Network, said in a statement at the time.

REUTERS/Thilo SchmuelgenLONDON, Dec 22 (Reuters) - The green hydrogen express is gathering pace, but it may have a worrying problem with leaks. At least four studies published this year say hydrogen loses its environmental edge when it seeps into the atmosphere. The United States included billions of dollars of green hydrogen tax credits in its Inflation Reduction Act and the European Union approved 5.2 billion euros ($5.5 billion) in subsidies for green hydrogen projects in September. While potential leakages of hydrogen are not expected to be on a scale that could derail all green hydrogen plans, any seepage would erode its climate benefits, they say.
[1/2] Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman speaks during a side event on the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia, 14 July 2022. The proceeds from green bonds will not be used to fund hydropower plants larger than 25 MW, nuclear projects and any biomass-based power generation with biomass originating from protected areas, the government said in the green bond framework released on Wednesday. A green finance working committee headed by the Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran will select public sector projects for green financing from those submitted by government departments. The committee will annually identify fresh projects to be funded through green bonds. The Indian government had sought assistance for its green bond framework from the World Bank and CICERO Shades of Green, a Danish firm that helps with environment assessments on green bond frameworks.

There he was, on the hurricane-ravaged streets of Fort Myers Beach, Fla., the president of the United States, saying: No one effs with a Biden. I don’t use quotation marks because he used an unprintable word my mother taught me is “vulgar.”In ancient Rome, where formal Latin was spoken only by the educated class and written by the likes of Cicero, the street language was called the “vulgate” because it was the common tongue. By the fourth century, there was even a Bible translation in the vulgate.
